As we approach a year since the beginning of the pandemic, we also approach a year since the app Zoom was introduced into our lives.
The almost full year of online learning has shed light on lessons from all kinds of aspects in life. From a fashion standpoint, Zoom has taught us that looking presentable in person and online are two totally different ball games. Below are a few accessory favorites that can step up your Zoom game.
Blue light blocking glasses Beyond aesthetics, blue light glasses have become essential for many that have experienced headaches and eye strains due to an increase in daily screen time. A 2018 study indicated that excessive exposure to blue light, which comes from digital screens, can cause damage to the retinas of the eyes. These glasses claim to filter out the blue light that comes from digital screens. The use of them, along with taking breaks from screens, can help reduce the fatigue caused by blue light. Sophomore government and politics major Alex Truszkowska said she is not completely sure if blue light glasses always help her headaches, but she still likes to wear them.
Additionally, the glasses have become so popular that multiplesites offer them in a variety of styles. Finding a pair of glasses that fits your personal style can give a sense of classiness to your overall Zoom look.
Jewelry Let's be honest, Zoom gives us the opportunity to wear comfy sweatpants that we otherwise wouldn’t wear every day in an in-person meeting. Students have been wearing loungewear more than ever. However, something as simple as layering on a statement piece of jewelry on top of a crew neck can make your loungewear set ten times chicer.
Students said that they love putting on earrings for Zoom meetings because it makes them feel more confident and put-together on camera. “I could wear mascara and contour my face but earrings just top it all off,” freshman computer science major Michelle Drabovsky said.
From hoops to pearls to studs, the earring style truly depends on the person. Choose the pair that feels right for you. You can even switch it up every day, the options are endless.
Drabovsky is also a fashion blogger who creates and styles outfits. She shares her content across multiple social media platforms, including on her instagram @michelledrabosvky. She said that her go-to earrings are thick gold hoops. “I feel like they bring out the features of my face really well,” Drabovsky said.
Necklaces are also pieces of jewelry that can be shown off within the camera frame on Zoom. The same concept can be applied to these, go with the style that makes you feel happy.
You can also get creative and layer different combinations of necklaces. Layering simple necklaces with chains have been a huge trend for the past year. Chunky chains are the most visible from far away. This is especially helpful when there are a lot of people in a Zoom meeting and the video squares get smaller, making details of the camera frame difficult to be seen.
Hair Accessories Hair accessories, like scrunchies and barrettes, keep your hair out of your face while also adding flair to your look. Moreover, they can be used for various hairstyles. You can use them with a ponytail, your hair half up or even with your hair down.
Claw clips, smaller hair clips and headbands have been all over Instagram and Pinterest. Freshman international business major Ruma Dewal said that claw clip hairstyles are always cute, “there's really no way they can look bad and it's easier to do instead of a bun or a ponytail since you don't really have to brush your hair.”
Ring-lights This item might not be an accessory that you put on your body, but good lighting can make a huge difference in your styling game when it comes to digital meetings.
The camera on our computers might not always highlight the clothes and accessories we wear because of a lack of good lighting. On occasions like an important interview, a ring light can be your best friend.
In a way, the right accessories can be an extension of our personality. In a world where online human interactions and meetings can only display the upper half of your body, accessories can be the key to dressing for success.
