What are students wearing at UMD

University of Maryland students are bringing out their fall staples as the weather cools down and the leaves change.

Jessica Cruz, who majored in fashion merchandising at Marymount University and worked as a GAP merchandiser for seven years, predicts many upcoming trends for the late fall and winter seasons.

“I see this fall and winter fashion being Clueless meets Gossip Girl,” said Cruz, “with a little New York 90’s.”

Clothing items popular at the height of the 90s, such as classic denim pieces, Mary Janes, short skirts, midi dresses, cargo pants, and gold hoops are trends we should be looking out for this season, said Cruz

Here are some of the great looks we saw on campus this week!

Aida Nyaeinga is a freshman sociology and theater double major heading to her class at Clarice after eating at the South Campus Dining Hall.

Inspiration: Always in All Black

“I always dress in all black, but some days I just want to feel more cute than other days,” said Nyaeinga, “and today was one of those days.”

Nyaeinga likes wearing midi skirts because they are the perfect length to cover up while still being able to show off her shoes. During the fall, she adds a shawl as a layer if it is chilly outside.

Aidan Baca is a freshman psychology major heading to his dorm after his fiction writing class.

Inspiration: Sweaters and Khakis

“I just like wearing sweaters and khakis,” said Baca.

Baca told us his whole outfit is thrifted because he finds it important to reuse clothing. His favorite place he recommends for thrifting is at your local Goodwill.

Sophia Kellogg, a freshman English major, is pictured here heading to Spanish class.

Inspiration: The Garden

“I really like this band called The Garden, and they're two guys that wear a lot of denim and cowboy boots,” said Kellogg.

Kellogg got the lace top and skirt from her local Goodwill and the denim vest from the Georgetown flea market. Thrifting is one of her favorite ways to find new clothing.

“I am very color-obsessed,” Okoye said, “I like wearing a lot of colors.”

Okoye said when choosing an outfit the main factors she takes into account are the temperature, who she will be seeing, and what classes she has that day.

Students at UMD have unique ways of expressing themselves as the weather gets cooler. Despite dressing differently, all four students felt that sourcing clothes sustainably, through thrifting or reusing, is very important and they encourage their fellow students to do so as well.
