With gameday and football season back, students are looking forward to not only watching the game, but also using fashion as a way to embrace and show school spirit.
Here is a guide to what University of Maryland students are wearing for game day this football season. These trends are a great place to start thinking about what to wear to games, but can be personalized to individual style.
Senior criminal justice major Megan Moore enjoys using game day as a way to express her style. “I wear my typical clothing, but make sure that I wear something Maryland related,” says Moore. Some of her favorite trends include boyfriend jeans, corset tops and oversized button downs.
“This year specifically, the tennis skirts and athletic wear has become a lot more popular on campus, so I’ve definitely upped my wardrobe in that aspect,” says Avery Zellweger, a sophomore kinesiology major.
A major trend seen at UMD tailgates and football games this semester so far is how students will wear the red, black or white clothes they already have in their closets. This is a great way to stay trendy for game day and use accessories to show school spirit.
There were a lot of people at both the games and tailgates wearing athleisure clothes, which is a huge trend at the moment. This trend is comfortable and easy to move around in throughout the day. Whether it is a matching workout set, a tennis skirt or an exercise dress, this trend is a great way to stay comfortable while cute throughout the day.
Another popular piece at UMD game days this fall are denim, black or white bottoms with red shirts or accessories. This trend is super easy and simple, and includes pieces that can easily be repurposed and worn again.
Students are also taking to customizing their hair to show their school spirit.
“I am a huge fan of the little red and yellow butterfly clips to put in your hair and fun hairstyles like braids,” Zellweger says.
Other popular accessories are socks with the UMD logo and red or yellow belts, which tie together any game day outfit.
Junior kinesiology major, Danielle Gedz, takes an environmental approach to her game day wardrobe. Gedz goes to thrift stores, especially to look for fast fashion pieces so she’s not contributing to the fast fashion industry firsthand.
“I prefer street style the most, I love baggy and comfortable clothes and wearing high-top Converse everywhere, and making it look good while still being comfortable all day,” Gedz shares.
Gedz also likes to mix pieces she already owns with Maryland clothes or accessories to make her game day outfits.
The biggest keys to game day this season is staying comfy and cute. The most popular trends to achieve that goal are athleisure clothes and wearing pieces that are on trend and accessorizing with UMD and red accessories.
