Everyone has a different mindset when it comes to deciding when to swipe right or left on Tinder. It may be that the person has a picture with a cute pet, looks attractive, wrote a funny bio or you’re just hoping to see “It’s a Match” pop up on your screen. Everyone has a different method behind the madness of Tinder; you just have to find what works best for you.
People who include a picture of themselves with a dog or some type of cute pet are utilizing an infamous method to make you want to swipe right on their profile. Animals = cuteness overload. Pets can make the person in the picture seem more attractive or appealing. Oldest trick in the book.
Maybe they don’t even need a cute animal in one of their pictures to make you swipe right. There is always the possibility that the person might just be really freakin’ cute. Without hesitation, you swipe right and hope within two seconds it says you two are a match...made in heaven. On the flip side, “I swipe left if they are very clearly not my taste. I have some physical turn offs that would make it very hard to swipe right on,” said Kate Savinelli, a junior multi-platform journalism major.
A 2019 study titled “Swiping right: face perception in the age of Tinder” finds that Tinder users judge people based on their physical attractiveness as well as what they perceive as their moral character. The article states that,“First impressions extracted from faces are strongly linked not only with simple judgments of attractiveness, but also with judgments of moral character and social desirability”. This cognitive process seems to be most noticeable when people view unfamiliar faces, which Tinder is filled with.
Another way of catching someone’s attention and getting them to swipe right is by having a funny or creative bio. The internet has a plethora of corny jokes people can use. Bonus points if you come up with your own joke. “I usually will swipe right on someone if they have a funny bio or something that I can relate to. This is most likely a conversation starter that will lead to more talking,” said Savinelli.
Sometimes people really want to connect with others for a variety of reasons and decide to swipe right and hope to be a match. One swipe of a hand could land you with your dream person. You never know unless you try, right?
