With the ongoing comeback of early 2000s fashion, it's no surprise that the fashion world is looking towards more recent eras. 2010s fashion made its return to runways and red carpets early last summer, and is only becoming more prevalent.
Anna Rubin, a sophomore nursing major said of this phenomenon, “I didn't know they were having a comeback. But now that I do know about it, I think that it should have stayed in the past.”
Like Rubin, you might roll your eyes at the thought of dressing like you did in the 2010s, but there is a way to keep this look current while still embracing the upcoming trend.
Designer, merchandiser, and boutique owner Violette Avra discussed with us how newer iterations of the peplum are completely reinventing the look with new silhouettes.
“Well, it's coming back as probably baby doll, which is a shorter version of a dress. And a lot of people use it as a top or they use it also as a mini dress.”
This trend is super sustainable because it is so easy to style in different ways. If you plan to go out, it can be worn as a dress. Still, casual outfits could pair peplum tops with jeans and cute sneakers.
Sophomore hearing and speech sciences major Shayna Levin said she would pair this trend with “a cute pair of mom jeans that aren't too baggy…. And like a pair of Converse or Blazers or something like that.”
Avra also offered her take on fabrics that we’ll see paired with this trend in the next few months.
“I think a lot of sheer, the baby doll was made in chiffon, which is a sheer fabric and the fashion going forward, especially for 2023 from everything that I read and see on the runways, it's a lot of sheer out there.”
Sheer fabrics have been returning to the forefront of recent trends in the last year, and this trend is no exception. Sheer peplums create a really interesting look that can elevate any outfit, especially when combined with other fabric trends like sequins and patterns.
