With October already halfway through, deciding what to be for Halloween is on everyone’s mind. If you haven’t decided yet, don’t worry. Finding a great costume and dressing up is all about having fun, so why not look towards the things you’re already a fan of?
Raphael Wizman, better known as Marc Laurent, is the designer behind the iconic looks of pop culture icons like Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, and Prince. He’s also a huge supporter of people taking inspiration from his looks.
“I'm very happy. To see that it keeps on working is great,” said Wizman.
The fun part of recreating the style of your favorite musician is that there are so many options, and only a few staple pieces each one needs to be recognizable. For example, if you wanted to dress like Ariana Grande, all you would need is a cute outfit, a toy microphone, and her signature ponytail.
Maybe you want to recreate a look from a movie or television show instead. Looks based on characters are easy to recreate, and include your friends or significant others in for an adorable group costume.
“I have plans to do Anakin and Padme [from Star Wars] with my boyfriend,” said sophomore criminology and criminal justice major Marissa Jarrett, “and I'm thinking of doing Jesse from Breaking Bad.”
Another idea is dressing up like superheroes. These characters are iconic, easily recognizable, and so easy to do with anybody. With your best friend, you could dress up like Batman and Superman. If you’re dressing up as a couple, you could be Batman and Catwoman or Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.
Of course, a lot of these costumes are high-effort. If you’re looking for something simple, there are tons of easily-recognizable characters where all you need are clothes that you already own, and maybe a little bit of makeup.
If you own a leather jacket, Sandy from Grease is a great look. Pair it with a black top, shiny black leggings, and a red lip. The characters from Scooby Doo are always a great group costume, and as long as you stick to their signature colors, you can pretty much wear anything you want.
“It's very easy to recreate something like Rue from Euphoria. Like, if you're on a lower budget or you just don't want to buy new things…” said sophomore kinesiology major Ella Blank, “Just wear a baggy t-shirt.”
Blank and her friend have decided to dress up as Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty this year. Dressing up like Disney characters is super easy, and you can be as extra, or low-key, as you like.
For the gamers out there, or just the people who don’t want to buy anything new, video-game costumes can really let you showcase your creativity.
One super cute costume you can do last minute is to dress up like a character from The Sims. This one is easy, you can literally wear whatever you want. All you really have to get is this headband from Amazon.
Remember, dressing up for Halloween is about having fun. Wear whatever you want to wear, but picking something you love might make it even better.
