Is this color worth falling for? Lemon yellow for fall

Versace, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Bottega Veneta are all designer brands that have showcased a bright lemon yellow color this fall season, but is lemon yellow really the next big trend?
According to a Sept. 2020 Vogue article, lemon yellow is one of the greatest trends this fall fashion season. Not too bright like neon, yet still lively, this color is the perfect trend to hop on to elevate your fall 2020 style, but do college students agree?
“I think that any color is versatile, including lemon yellow. It all depends on the energy of the pieces with that particular color,” fashion blogger and freshman apparel design major Nura D. said. “A few years ago, people may have been hesitant to incorporate baby pink into their wardrobe but now baby pink is a common, trendy color for both men and womens’ fashion.”
“I do find that yellow might be hard to incorporate because not many colors go with yellow,” freshman business major Rachel Miara said. “It is not a neutral color making it hard for an outfit that includes yellow to have many other colors.”
Yellow is one of the warm colors that is often associated with fall, though it can be difficult to incorporate the color into your wardrobe, depending on your personal style.
“I think it's hard to incorporate this color into different styles, because it's such a bold color,” freshman hearing and speech sciences major Danielle Betaharon said. “I usually wear a more alternative look and I'm not really sure how to wear it without losing that aesthetic.”
Part of the reason why the color can be difficult to wear is simply due to the shade of yellow itself. Though yellow is a warm color, bright lemon yellow is often associated with summer time, contrasted against the muted neutrals we often see in fall fashion.
“I think yellow is a fun fall color. I don't think the particular shade of lemon yellow Vogue was speaking about is a fall color. I feel like I associate lemon yellow with summer,” Betaharon said. “I associate mustard yellow more with fall than lemon yellow. I don't think it's super in this season.”
Though yellow may seem an intimidating color to wear, there are various shades that allow for a variety of pieces and styles of clothing to easily be incorporated into your wardrobe. Don’t be afraid of change. Many trends introduce new concepts in fashion to us, yet there is a reason that they become trends in the first place.
“Over the last couple fall seasons, mustard yellow has been a trendy color in menswear and womenswear. I think that generally people are a little intimidated by incorporating the color yellow into their wardrobe and that mustard yellow was the starting point for designers to get consumers comfortable with yellow,” Nura said. “Now, I think that consumers are a little more adventurous and are ready for a change! For inspiration, check out Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, and Phillip Lim’s Fall 2020 runway shows. They incorporate lemon yellow in sophisticated ways that make me want to get my hands on lemon yellow pieces as soon as possible!”
Although the shade can definitely be a challenge to work with, there are small ways that you can easily incorporate the color into your daily look without straying away from your personal look.
“I should definitely incorporate more yellow and bright colors into my wardrobe. I think a light yellow would be easy to incorporate,” freshman Biology major Anita Farid said. “I would definitely personally start small like getting socks or wearing yellow Vans shoes [that] I own but never wear because I feel it’s hard to match sometimes with different outfits.”
Accessories are a great way to slowly incorporate the color if you are intimidated or don’t find it easy to wear. Some small things such as earrings, handbags, scarves, socks and even nail polish will allow for a pop of color, even in an outfit with mostly neutrals. This makes it easy to incorporate while maintaining your personal style if you aren’t a fan of color.
“Many stores have been selling yellow sweaters this season, and I think that’s the perfect way to incorporate lemon yellow into your wardrobe and try something new,” Nura said. “If wearing lemon yellow clothing is a bit too bold for your taste, start with yellow accessories or jewelry. I have been seeing yellow resin earrings and purses that would add a pop of color to any outfit.”
Once you’re more comfortable with the color, or if you’re just looking to hop right onto this trend, lemon yellow is stunning as a top, such as a crew neck, hoodie, blazer or puffer jacket. The bold color will make that piece the highlight of your outfit, making it a fun staple that is easy to create looks with.
