Birthday celebrations are exciting for many students, but some may not know where to start their search in choosing a location or how to celebrate their big day. Luckily, some students are willing to share their favorite birthday celebration spots.
Senior criminology and criminal justice major Yotti Urbonas, enjoys going to Busboys and Poets for brunch and El Centro for dinner. El Centro, a restaurant that offers Mexican cuisine, is one of her favorites because of the desserts they offer.
“I am not a very big dessert lover, but the churros they have there get me every time,” Urbonas said. She loves the churros because El Centro has multiple dipping sauces, including dulce de leche and chocolate.
Urbonas also enjoys dressing up for her special day. “It's so fun to dress up and wear a sash or tiara,” she said.
When Urbonas wants to stay in to celebrate, she likes to bake cookies. Her roommates have surprised her by decorating her apartment and said that they “are so excited to get in the spirit.”
Another local place students can get desserts for their birthday is Insomnia Cookies. Sophomore cell biology and molecular genetics major Ella McCloskey said she always gets cookie cakes from Insomnia for her friends.
The Hall CP is another favorite of some students like junior civil engineering major Rachel DeBrabander. Debrabander likes to get the handmade soft pretzels from The Hall CP.
DeBrabander prefers to celebrate in College Park rather than D.C. “It is easier for friends to celebrate with you in College Park because people are closer,” she said.
One of her favorite birthday memories from College Park is when her roommates surprised her by bringing her best friend from home to College Park. She also said her parents have come to visit her for her birthday.
For those that are willing to make the trip to D.C., McCloskey said her favorite birthday memory at the University of Maryland was from when she and her friends took the metro into D.C.“We always go to dinner and walk around, which is always a fun night,” she said.
Birthday celebrations can be as simple or elaborate as one wants; luckily, College Park has many options to celebrate both large and small.
“My ideal birthday is always spending time with people I love and who are my biggest supporters. I love being with people who make me happy,” Urbonas said.
