With fitness classes transferring online because of the pandemic, many of us are finding it hard to stay motivated on our own time. However, socially distanced group fit classes are a great way to try something new and still be around other people.

The University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center offers many group fitness classes, from yoga to barre to Zumba.

Sara Sporkin is a sophomore economics major who enjoys Eppley’s group fitness classes for the social aspect.

“I like that they provide a structured way to work out with other people and I usually leave feeling like I got a good workout,” Sporkin said.

She also noticed that the people in her group fitness classes have been mindful about cleaning their equipment and staying spread out during the class, so she feels safe working out.
Natalie LaRosa is a senior supply chain management and business management major with a passion for fitness. As a group fitness instructor at Eppley, she gets to share her love for fitness with others and positively contribute to the campus.

“I love my job because I never have a bad day at work. Each time I get to teach it is the highlight of my day and I couldn’t ask for a better job,” LaRosa said.

LaRosa also made note of the facility’s COVID-19 procedures to ensure students remain healthy while staying fit.

Eppley has strict policies regarding reservations, masks, social distancing, and sanitation that allow students to workout without feeling stressed about COVID-19.

“I feel safer at work than I do in any grocery store due to the way that RecWell and the University of Maryland has handled the pandemic,” LaRosa said.

Sophomore Julia Glasgow is a marketing and operations management business analytics major. She attended one of LaRosa’s barre classes and found it to be both physically difficult and fun!

“I like group fit because it gives me a workout I don’t have to plan for, where I can be encouraged by others,” Glasgow said.

Unfortunately, due to a recent surge of Maryland COVID-19 cases, all group fitness classes have been moved online. To attend a virtual group fitness class, visit here for streamed classes!
