After a long year of sweatpants and yoga pants as our primary fashion, the 2021 Grammy nominees went all out in their fashion choices. In doing so, they gave red carpet onlookers a glimpse of normalcy.
“All looks for the Grammys red carpet are so unique,” said Maria Starling, a Fashion Institute of Technology student majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Business Management. “An overall theme of the fashion would be hard to pin-point.”
Starling noted that the Grammys have a different tone in fashion compared to other events. As the voices of current mainstream music, artists’ fashion are important to make note of. “In my opinion, Dua Lipa's red carpet and performance outfits were the best this year,” said Starling.
Dua Lipa wore a dazzling, pink dress on the red carpet for music’s biggest night. The dress was custom-made by Versace, according to Insider.com. Lipa’s head-turning, red carpet staple was followed by three equally impressive outfits in the evening - each in the same bedazzled style as the Versace dress.
“I get Barbie of Swan Lake vibes from this dress,” said Mary Hood, a senior computer science major at the University of Maryland, regarding Lipa’s red carpet dress. “The jeweled butterfly bodice is gorgeous and creates a beautiful focal point for this intricate dress.” Hood was equally impressed with Lipa’s subsequent dresses. But the “Don’t Start Now” singer was not the only Grammy nominated artist making headlines after the red carpet.
Harry Styles stunned on the red carpet in a plaid blazer and pink boa scarf. The former One Direction frontman blurred fashion styles between masculine and feminine to once again bring modern fashion to a new edge, but not everyone was impressed with Styles’ choice.
“What Harry Styles wore, that scarf. It became a meme,” said Sammy Garcia, senior business major at the University of Maryland.“In my opinion, sticking to your roots and humility would make the artist appear way more genuine as opposed to wearing a 20k outfit just for the flex where ugly and expensive is the new cool,” Garcia said.
Whether you loved or despised the fashion choices of 2021’s Grammy red carpet, both Styles and Lipa’s styles were rooted in the past. Harry’s plaid jacket and boa evoke memories of loud fashion pieces from the 1970s whereas Lipa’s translucent, glittery dress cries nostalgia of the early 2000s.
These strong fashion choices, which look back at styles of the past, will be leading the way of fashion in the future as the world opens up again and fashion is no longer contained to a Zoom screen.
