The highly anticipated “Wicked” movie trailer dropped during this year’s Super Bowl on Feb. 11, offering an initial look at the Broadway classic remake.
The film is based on the beloved musical, which premiered on Broadway back in 2003 and is still running today. Inspired by the story of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked” follows Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, who later becomes Glinda the Good, both before and after Dorothy arrives in the Land of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande star as Elphaba and Galinda respectively, and many are interested to see what the two accomplished performers bring to the film.
“I’m kind of afraid that the songs are going to be changed,” said Brooke Ensminger, a freshman journalism and cinema studies major. Ensminger worries that since both actors have such high profiles as performers, they may change a lot of the classic elements of the musical.
Keira Hardesty, a freshman journalism major, is also unsure about the casting choices.
“I sort of have mixed opinions on Ariana Grande, so it's sort of weird to see her in that setting. I know she started on Broadway, but it's not how I'm used to seeing her and I'm not her biggest fan. But I think Cynthia Erivo is going to be really, really good,” Hardesty said.
While the starring actresses are stirring up debate, the production quality is receiving praise.
“Cinematically, I think it looks really awesome. I think the special effects…at least what you can see in the trailer seems really cool and advanced technologically,” said Tess Phillips, a freshman journalism and public policy major.
Ensminger shared a similar opinion, “I think the production quality seems very high, like visually it looks really good.”
Despite the appeal of the big screen, for those like Phillips, who grew up doing musical theater, seeing a Broadway staple such as “Wicked” as a movie adaption may taint the original version.
“I feel like this film was just unnecessary… there’s so many remakes of things and live-action versions of movies nowadays… I'm tired of people making movies out of stories that are already timeless and that already exist,” Phillips said.
Hardesty, however, loved the trailer overall and is very excited about the movie.
The film will also feature big names like Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Jonathan Bailey. It will be released on Nov. 27, 2024, and the second part of the two-movie series, “Wicked Part Two,” can be seen a year later on Nov. 26, 2025.
With many varying opinions about the trailer, “Wicked” is sure to be a must-see film this November.
