Don't sacrifice style for comfort: coat styles for fall that can do both

As autumn continues and the days get colder, it’s the perfect time to stock up on jackets to keep you warm. Coats can sometimes be tricky to pair with and potentially hide the perfect outfit, however there are many types this season to match everyone’s personal style. Here are some trendy coat ideas to keep yourself warm and stylish!

FUZZY (TEDDY) JACKET:

Fuzzy jackets, sometimes referred to as “teddy” jackets, are the perfect combination of fashionable and comfortable. Professor of Fashion and Apparel Studies at the University of Delaware, Jaehee Jung, adds that the comfortable feeling of a teddy jacket is built into our psyche.

“I think something fuzzy like faux fur would be great since we want to feel warm but psychologically, makes us feel comforting, like how people were obsessed with stocking up toilet papers for the same reason,” Jung said. “It’s the tactile quality that makes us feel leaning toward soft and fuzzy feely objects.”

Teddy jackets have already emerged on campus, as sophomore psychology major Jenna Land has been sporting her light brown fuzzy jacket recently.“I’ve never been super trendy, but I absolutely love this fuzzy jacket,” Land said. “The two bright colors can compliment many outfits, and at the same time it’s comfy and keeps me warm!”

Coming in all different colors, lengths and materials, a fuzzy jacket adds a comfortable and stylish addition to any closet.

TRENCH COATS:

For a more sophisticated look, a trench coat is the way to go. Typically reaching to one’s knees, a trench coat can be worn open to display the outfit underneath, or it can be worn closed or belted to make a strong statement; this jacket IS the outfit.

Internet searches for leather trench coats specifically have increased six-fold for the 2020-21 cold months, according to an Aug. 26 article by VOGUE Paris.

These coats come in many different colors, but a classic beige is particularly popular due to its ability to match different styles it is layered on top of and matches the brown shades the fall season emulates. These can definitely get pricier, but a chic look that guarantees warmth is a great staple to have this season.

BOMBER:
A bomber jacket is extremely versatile with colors, material and length. Typical materials include satin, for a luxe and posh look, corduroy, for a warmer and more comfortable feel, or even cotton and denim.

Sophomore journalism and government and politics double major Mira Varghese wore a chic black corduroy bomber to Pike and Rose, a dining and shopping area in Montgomery County. “I really like this jacket because it’s so comfortable and goes with so many different things,” Varghese said. “I also love the corduroy fabric which adds a really fun element.”

Layering is another very important element to a bomber jacket. One with more colors or a fancier design deserves something more neutral under it in order to appreciate the flare of the jacket itself. On the other hand, a plain and unicolor bomber can be layered over something more bold in order to accentuate what is beneath it.

Bombers are known for being unisex and are quite popular among masculine styles as well, satisfying any closet and makes an interesting staple for the fall season.

Each of these styles combines the comfort of staying warm and the style of the runway. Make sure to experiment with layering to ensure diversity with colors and textures!
