Whether you know Dominic Fike from his breakout hit singles “3 nights”and “Babydoll”, or from his recent acting debut in season 2 of the Emmy award winning show Euphoria, this Florida native has taken the music industry by storm.
On November 28, I attended Fike’s sold out Out of Ordertour at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland. The concert did not disappoint. Fike stunned the audience with his powerful voice, impressive musicality, and electric stage presence. Fans even got a sneak peek of a song off Fike’s unreleased upcoming album.
The show started with crowd favorite “Westcoast Collective” off of his first EP, Don’t Forget About Me, Demos. Taking the stage with his electric guitar, fans erupted at the first notes. This was the perfect song to open with, energizing the crowd while saving the bigger hits for the end of the night. The setlist consisted of a mix of his debut album What Could Possibly Go Wrong?and some fan favorites from his first EP.
Dominic Fike’s voice and talent were exemplified during this live performance. I was already a mega fan before attending the concert, with seven out of ten of my Spotify Wrapped top songs in 2022 being Fike’s, but even I didn’t expect to be that impressed. Fike’s first album experimented with cutting edge production techniques such as pitch shifting and overdubbing, a technique used to layer vocals on top of each other. However, this performance proved that Fike doesn’t need fancy technology to shine, just his voice and a guitar. You need to see him live to appreciate his true genius.
Overall, the setlist was upbeat and lively with songs such as “Double Negative” and my personal favorite“ The Kiss of Venus."Colored lights flashed in the background as he performed. Fike did take the chance to slow it down and show off his keyboard skills during “Rollerblades."The crowd could tell Fike was having a great time on stage and he even thanked the audience for being one of the best crowds yet and having amazing energy.
Considering Dominic Fike’s first album was released in July of 2020, many fans are anxiously awaiting a second. Over the course of the tour, Fike has confirmed that album two is well on its way and fans won’t have to wait much longer. In fact, Fike even treated fans with an unreleased track off the upcoming album titled “Think Fast”. He serenaded the audience on the acoustic guitar to a song about finding love and happiness. I can already tell it will be a favorite on the next album.
The show ended with three major hits, “Vampire,” “Babydoll" and “Why”played back to back. Fike played “Vampire”in a slightly different key and style than the original record which was a fun way to spice things up and show off his creativity. “Babydoll”was the crowd pleaser of the night as he pointed the microphone at the audience, who screamed the chorus so loud you could barely hear Fike’s electric guitar. His hit single “Why”closed out the night, with the song's infectious melody and catchy bassline you just could not help but sing and dance around. The crowd waved their hands in the air and screamed out the lyrics.
Fike thanked the audience one last time before exiting the stage, but fans just couldn’t get enough. Shortly after Fike’s exit, the crowd started chanting, “encore!” wishing for one more glimpse at the star. Luckily for us, that wish was granted.
Fike said goodbye to the audience with the single “Phone Numbers." He even created his own backing track on the spot with a looping device, which allows artists to quickly record a section of music and play it on repeat. Toward the end of the song, Fike jumped off the stage and ran to the barricade. Fans flooded to the stage hoping to get closer to him before the night ended. This was such a fun song to include in an encore and the night certainly ended on a high note. However, as Fike left the stage for the last time some fans were left wondering why he didn’t play his hits “3 nights” and “Chicken Tenders." These big hits were left off the setlist for the night, but considering we heard an unreleased song, I didn’t feel particularly cheated.
Overall, my friends and I agreed Dominic Fike put on an amazing performance, and we had a great time dancing and singing along to some of our favorite songs. You can be sure that I will be listening to the next album as soon as it drops and will definitely be going to see Dominic Fike in concert again.
