Bucket hat looks for the fall

By Emily R. Condon

Bucket hats: a booming trend in both men’s and women’s apparel. With the style’s roots in fisherman apparel and then resurfacing with 80s hip hop, the bucket hat seems to be an accessory that continues to return.

Taylor Edwards, a freshman letters and sciences major, was seen wearing her black bucket hat paired with black jeans, a white top and a black corset in the Denton Communities on Oct. 26.

“I will wear bucket hats when it fits my aesthetic. It’s more like an accessory: if it fits, I’ll wear it. And also if my hair complies with it I will wear it. I usually wear it on sunny days to hide the sun from my face,” Edwards said.

Rihanna is a staple of the look, with her fluffy fur hats in animal print, black or the iconic pink bucket hat from over the summer. This trend is popular in men’s fashion, as well, with Tyler the Creator’s nude bucket hat or even Liam Gallagher’s Gucci bucket hat showing up around Instagram. LystInsights included Prada and Adidas x Ivy Park bucket hats in its list of 2021’s hottest brands and products. Google Trends saw a peak in searches for bucket hats this year in early July, which was also the peak of searches since 2004.

Annika Eleander, a freshman letters and sciences major, owns her own tailgate apparel business and shared that bucket hats are a big sale.

“My sales of bucket hats are more than I would’ve guessed when I started to make them. At one point they were my most sold item (now second most behind tank tops), and I found people loved to give them as graduation presents for friends, so they would buy like five or more at once,” Eleander said.

For this first look, Zoe Cross, freshman double major in criminal justice and psychology, shows off a cow print bucket hat paired with beige relaxed skate jeans from Urban Outfitters and a brown top. The hat, from Obey Clothing, was purchased at Hazel Boutique in Ramsey, NJ.

For the next, Cross shows off a fake Burberry print bucket hat from a thrift store. It is paired with a coppery colored sweater and black bell bottom jeans - perfect for fall weather and Thanksgiving colors.

In this final look, a Nike bucket hat, purchased at Nike Georgetown, is dressed down a bit. Paired with Nike Air Force 1s, Nike socks, leggings, and a plain top with a sweatshirt, this shows a way that a bucket hat outfit could be worn more casually.

From fishermen to modern day celebrities, the trend seems to be one that will persist in both women’s and men’s fashion.
