Best springtime campus spots

Are you struggling with finding the perfect springtime spot? Fear no more, here’s five different spots on campus that are full of sunshine and good vibes.

McKeldin Mall:

One of the most iconic spots on campus is McKeldin Mall. This huge grassy area contains the McKeldin foundation, where tons of dogs and people hop in to cool off, and the perfect view of the McKeldin Library. Students bring blankets and hammocks as well as their backpacks in order to do their homework under the sun. Some people even bring frisbees, footballs and other fun items to play around with during a study break. “I like how there’s people around and it’s an open grassy area. I like the fountain, it’s a nice touch. It’s such an aesthetic, especially the saxophone guy that plays at night,” Kelly Pentz, a junior digital media communication major, said. Bask in the sun and enjoy this springtime campus spot.

Bridge over Paint Branch Stream (Behind University View and the Varsity Apartments):

This little “beach” setting is perfect for laying out a blanket and having a picnic with your significant other, close friend or roommate. Some people sit out with their laptop and notebook to get their homework done. Put your feet in the water if it’s a hot, sunny day and watch the fish swim by. This is a perfect stop if you enjoy people watching, as many people ride their scooters or walk their dogs over the bridge.

Paint Branch Trail:

This trail stretches 3.5 miles long, and a popular place for bikers and walkers. It lies “between Lake Artemesia and Cherry Hill Neighborhood Park,” according to TrailLink. The walk is scenic with trees, flowers, and the babbling Paint Branch Stream. Part of the trail is on-campus while others stretch off-campus.

Washington Quad:

There’s a volleyball court and plenty of space for laying out on blankets and towels. There’s also a few trees to provide some shade or to hang a hammock. I have even witnessed someone practicing walking on a tightrope tied between two trees. “I used to go there last year. It was a good spot. I liked how it was an open grassy area and very accessible because I lived right there,” Pentz said.  This spot has a great vibe and is right in the center of many on-campus apartments and suites.

Engineering Fields:

Play some softball or kickball on the Engineering Fields right near the Reckord Armory. You can hear the sounds of Route One behind you while enjoying your time with your friends and being active. There aren’t any trees around the field, so be prepared for the sun shining in your eyes.
