From the affordable pricing to the extensive frozen food selection, Trader Joe’s has quickly become a hallmark for college students when grocery shopping. Located just a quick fifteen minute drive away from the University of Maryland campus, Trader Joe’s offers everything a student needs for unique and easy meals. And what better time to check out the cult favorite than shortly after the release of their fall items. Rest assured that anything Trader Joe’s can make pumpkin, will be made pumpkin. This includes tortilla chips, ravioli, espresso beans and everything in between. But with this experimentation comes a fair share of hits and misses. Luckily, UMD students were able to share with us their top favorites so you can make sure you are spending your money on what’s worth it next time you stop in. Sophomore animal science major Madison Repass recommends the ‘Pumpkin Caramel Danish Kringle’. Repass says the kringle reminds her of, “something [her] grandma would make for the holidays,” and went as far as to say that if you told her it was, “freshly homemade” she would 100% percent believe it. The kringle, which features a pumpkin filling surrounded by a flaky pastry and topped with a caramel glaze, retails for $7.99. But be careful, because once your roommates get their hands on this pastry, it is sure to go quickly.

Sophomore African American studies major Chaviva Nicholas says the ‘Maple Non-Dairy Oat Beverage’ is an excellent dairy-alternative with a fall twist. When added to coffee, Nicholas says it “tastes like pancakes.” And at a $2.99 price point, this beverage is a great option for anyone looking to save money on coffee this semester by making it at home. Just don’t get too attached, as Trader Joe’s typically switches their product line once the seasons change. Moving over to the savory selection, one of my personal favorites is the ‘Autumnal Harvest Creamy Pasta Sauce’. A blend of pumpkin, butternut squash, carrots and tomatoes, this sauce is perfect for a fall pasta recipe. I personally put it on another Trader Joe’s cult classic, the ‘Cauliflower Gnocchi’, for an easy dinner. The jar retails for $3.49, making it a great affordable staple.
And finally, no fall foods list would be complete without an apple cider recommendation. In years past I have loved the ‘Honey Crisp Apple Cider’, but this year I decided to branch out and try the ‘Spiced Cider,’ and it did not disappoint. For only $3.29 a bottle, this cider is the perfect glass of fall. Warmed with some cinnamon and whipped cream, it instantly transports you to an apple orchard on a crisp autumn day. What more could you ask for?
