Tacos a la Madre is opening its first location and bringing new flavors to College Park this October.

The taqueria, opening at 5010 Berwyn Road, will feature classic Mexican dishes with meats such as carne asada (beef), al pastor (pork) and lengua (beef tongue). The dishes draw flavor inspiration from Southern California and Texas cuisine.

Their menu features a variety of signature tacos created by self-proclaimed “tacologists.” The dishes include Birria tacos and beef tacos filled with melted Oaxaca cheese and dipped in a flavorful broth. Tacos a la Madre also offers a variety of vegetarian options such as tacos de hongos (mushroom tacos).

The family-operated, veteran-owned business started last year in the midst of the pandemic out of owner Bertha, “la Madre”, Soriano’s home, according to co-owner Herson Romero.

“One day we were sitting in la Madre’s living room chatting about the future and how we all had a similar goal in life, to make something for ourselves that we can be proud of,” said Romero. “This area was missing out on the amazing and delicious Mexican food that has been created on the West and South Coast.”

As orders flooded in primarily through social media and their online website, Tacos a la Madre moved from operating out of la Madre’s kitchen to the Holiday Inn hotel in Hyattsville in June 2020.

“We opened up shop without knowing what everyone else would think and before we knew it they loved it,” said Romero.
As College Park residents, the family knew they wanted to keep  their business local.

The recipes originated from la Madre with added inspiration from co-owner Pedro Soriano, who previously lived on the West Coast. Soriano plans to bring those flavors and experiences to the East Coast.

Despite previously not having a location of their own, Romero says they have acquired a loyal following of “tacoholics,” many of who drive from out-of-state for one of their signature tacos. “We’ve been blessed with awesome ‘tacoholics,’ which we’ve acquired mainly through social media and word of mouth,” said Romero.

With an Instagram following of over 20,000, it is evident that many taco lovers are excited about the opening of their new location.

After looking at the dishes posted on Tacos a la Madres’ social media, junior dietetics major Maddie Mills said she is looking forward to trying the dishes.

“I am definitely most excited to try the Birria tacos after seeing them blow up all over my social media,” said Mills. “Hopefully this can be a new regular place for me.”

Senior philosophy, politics and economics major Diego Rittano, treasurer of the culinary club at the university, is impressed by the menu. “Tacos a la Madre has a number of flavorful and authentic Mexican recipes, like tacos al pastor, Birria tacos and even beef tongue tacos,” said Rittano. “There are only a handful of Mexican places in College Park, so a restaurant like this with genuine cuisine could do well.”

For first-time customers, Romero personally recommends carne asada fries, which are loaded with steak and other toppings.
“We are looking forward to having those that haven’t been able to place an order before, to try our food and see what the hype is about,” said Romero. “We really want people to know what it is that really makes us special.”

Tacos a la Madre is holding a soft opening on Oct. 2 and 3. Customers can pre-order for pickup online at tacosalamadre.com.
