On November 15, the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2023 Grammy awards during the afternoon. I will be discussing who was nominated for the major categories, my predictions of what’s going to win and what I want to win.
Record of the Year Nominees:
“Don't Shut Me Down” by ABBA
“Easy On Me” by Adele
“BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyoncé
“You And Me On The Rock” by Brandi Carlile Featuring Lucius
“Woman” by Doja Cat
“Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy
“The Heart Part 5” by Kendrick Lamar
“About Damn Time” by Lizzo
“As It Was” by Harry Styles.
I think “Easy On Me” could take this award home because historically, Adele has not lost a Grammy she has been nominated for, or “As It Was”. After all, it broke the Billboard record for a song staying at #1 which was for 15 weeks. I personally want “BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyoncé to win this award because she is in my top two favorite artists of all time and this song was an instant hit for me.
Album of the Year nominees:
“Voyage” by ABBA
“30” by Adele
“Un Verano Sin Ti” by Bad Bunny
“RENAISSANCE” by Beyoncé
“Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe)” by Mary J. Blige
“In These Silent Days” by Brandi Carlile
“Music Of The Spheres” by Coldplay
“Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” by Kendrick Lamar
“Special” by Lizzo
“Harry’s House” by Harry Styles
My predictions for what could take this award home are either “30” or “Un Verano Sin Ti.” As I previously mentioned, Adele has yet to lose a Grammy she’s nominated for, and Bad Bunny’s album was massive breaking multiple records as a Spanish-spoken record which makes him a contender for this award. I want “RENAISSANCE” to win because again, Beyoncé is one of my favorite artists and this album was so cohesive, beautiful, etc. Beyoncé also explores a lot of different sounds within this album that she has never touched before such as voguing.
Song of the Year nominees:
“abcdefu” by GAYLE
“About Damn Time” by Lizzo
“All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film)” by Taylor Swift
“As It Was” by Harry Styles
“Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy
“BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyonce
“Easy On Me” by Adele
“GOD DID” by DJ Khaled Featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend & Fridayy
“The Heart Part 5” by Kendrick Lamar
“Just Like That” by Bonnie Raitt
My predictions for what o will win are either “Easy on Me'” or “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film).” “Easy On Me” because just like the two other prediction explanations I provided, and “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film)” because of its amazing lyrics as well as she hasn’t lost any Grammys she’s been nominated for in a while. “All Too Well” is definitely what I want to win because lyrically it’s my favorite song of Swift’s.
Best New Artist nominees:
Anitta
Omar Apollo
DOMi & JD Beck
Muni Long
Samara Joy
Latto
Måneskin
Tobe Nwigwe
Molly Tuttle
Wet Leg
My predictions for who could take this award home are either Latto or Måneskin because they had big songs like “Beggin’” and “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE” this last upcoming year that I heard all over the radio. I really would like Omar Apollo to take this award because I love his music and what he stands for as he is the only LGBTQ+ artist on this list. He released a really good debut album called “Ivory” where he has very good vocals throughout each song which definitely makes him deserving of this award.
Best Pop Solo Performance nominees:
“Easy On Me: by Adele
“Moscow Mule” by Bad Bunny
“Woman” by Doja Cat
“Bad Habit” by Steve Lacy
“About Damn Time” by Lizzo
“As It Was” by Harry Styles.
My predictions for what will end up winning this award are “Easy on Me” and “As It Was” for the same reasons I previously mentioned. I really would like it if “Woman” took home this award because this is my favorite song off of her album “Planet Her” and her delivery on vocals as well as rap are impeccable on “Woman.”
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance nominees:
“Don't Shut Me Down” by ABBA
“Bam Bam” by Camila Cabello featuring Ed Sheeran
“My Universe” by Coldplay & BTS
“I Like You (A Happier Song)” by Post Malone & Doja Cat
“Unholy” by Sam Smith & Kim Petras.
My prediction for what will win is either “My Universe” or “Unholy.” I said, “My Universe” because of how globally famous BTS is and I chose “Unholy” because of its immediate success initiated by TikTok. I want “I Like You (A Happier Song)” to win because this song is very catchy and Doja Cat is one of my favorite artists.
Along with who I wanted to win, I also asked three UMDstudents who they wanted to see take home a Grammy.
Sophomore Spanish major Delilah Edgard-Anon said, “I want Beyoncé to take home every Grammy award she is nominated for because ‘RENAISSANCE’ was a really good body of work. It was unexpected for her to mix all these genres and it was just so well produced as well as written. It was a 10/10 for me”
“I don’t really watch/know much about the Grammys, but I would say Harry Styles or Adele because I could listen to their music in any mood that I’m in. I think that they have grown a lot as people in the music industry,” said Bailey Sulivan, sophomore economics and sociology major.
Sophomore criminology major Natalia Ortega said, “I really want to see Harry Styles win an award in all of the categories he’s nominated in because his success has been so huge this year and he’s so deserving of it!”
Overall, I feel like there were good choices nominated, but definitely a lot of snubs too, with artists like Nicki Minaj and Summer Walker receiving no nominations. I am curious to see who ends up winning and who knows, maybe your favorite artist will go home with an award!
