Halloween is just around the corner and along with a great show-stopping costume, you need just as glamorous makeup to perfectly compliment your look. Whether you’re going for scary or chic this Halloween, we have some ideas to inspire you!
With her recent boom in fame and her flamboyant stage presence on her new ‘Short N Sweet’ tour, it’s not surprising that Sabrina Carpenter was listed at number nine on CNN’s top 25 most searched Halloween costumes for 2024 via https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/24/style/halloween-costumes-google-trends-2024/index.html. From a corset with a heart-shaped cutout to some statement white boots to accompany the corset, here are some easy makeup staples to emulate the rising star.
Along with a bold curtain bang, Sabrina Carpenter’s makeup is nothing but pure glow, which can be emulated with any highlighter on the cheekbones, nose and inner corners of the eye as well as a generous amount of pigmented pinky blush. Carpenter is also seen to rock a doe-eye which can be achieved with a white eyeliner on the bottom waterline of the eye to give the illusion of a larger eye. Along with a pinky blush, those dressing up as Carpenter should also consider a nude-pink matte lipstick to finish off the look.
Addie Adeleke, freshman bio engineer major, is going the fantasy route for Halloween with a mermaid costume. “My outfit is a two-piece dress-like outfit. It has a top, green top, tube top, and a green and yellowish skirt. I also have green makeup, eyeshadow, and sparkles for my face, which was to act as scales,” Adeleke said.
To achieve the ‘scale’ look Adeleke mentioned, you need a fishnet stocking and any kind of shimmery makeup. First, apply your base of choice, i.e., foundation or primer, then lay one side of the fishnet stocking flat on any area of the face–usually on the cheekbones or the forehead–and tap in the pigment on the top of the stocking. Make sure not to move the material around too much to get more defined shapes. Finish with a shimmery lip to emphasize the dewy fantasy of a mermaid and you’re done!
Naima Haidara, freshman computer engineering major, is planning on going as a feminine “Joker” that resembles more of the Heath Ledger adaptation than the newer Joaquin Phoenix version.”
“I'm thinking I don't want to dye my hair green, so I'm just gonna dye my eyebrows green, and I'm gonna have like, like, you know, the triangle A clown makeup, and then like, with an eye, like, hahaha, on my face,” Haidara said.
Though there are many ways to emulate the clown look, it is common to start with a white foundation base, though you can opt for a more natural base and bring in the clown elements later. With the main colors of the Joker being purple, green and red, it leaves creative opportunity on the eyes for any color as eyeshadow such as green or purple with a black fake lash. The bright red lips, however, sell the outfit, which can be achieved by using a dark red matte lipstick and smearing it on the sides to emphasize an eerie, smile-like look. Following the release of the second installment of “Beetlejuice”, it is not surprising that many people are going for a spooky and eerie “Beetlejuice” inspired Halloween costume. Whether they are dressing up as Jenna Ortega’s character, Astrid Deetz, or a feminine-inspired Beetlejuice himself, there is one makeup trend that has been circulating the internet that might just be the perfect statement aspect of a Beetlejuice costume.
This trend, which is commonly applied to the lips but can also be used on the nose as shown above, involves applying a liquid pigment base, usually green but can also be purple or white, on the bottom, and letting that dry to then pursing the lips or scrunching the bridge of the nose and applying a dark pigment such as black on top. After generously applying the black to the pursed lips, the pigment should reveal a sort of crackle or spider web-like effect where the dark pigment is applied.
Along with this trend, a combination of purple and green eyeshadow on the eyes will do well to compliment the bold lip with obviously a dark twiggy lash to give an eerie finish to the look, which can be achieved by layering a dark mascara or using bold fake lashes.
Cassandra Nti, freshman chemical engineering student, is going the fantasy route in the form of Stormy, a villain fairy from the Winx Club, but leaning towards a more natural approach for the makeup. “My character is a villain, but she's like, pinkish, and so my friend has pink glitter. I'm probably gonna dabble some on my cheeks, but like a fairy” Nti said.
With many costumes this year incorporating glitter as makeup in some way, many products such as Colourpop’s Gliterally Obsessed Body Glitter Gel, e.l.f. Cosmetics’ Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow, and Wet n Wild’s Fantasy Maker Glitter Gel are great affordable options that can
