The only pressure more intense than winning the football game is showing up to gameday dressed in the most fashionable outfit. Each year, Maryland students come to games decked out in the trendiest, most flattering fashion of the season, and this year, the standout print is gingham. According to commerce editor Joy Montgomery from British Vogue, gingham has actually “usurped classic florals,” and taken the cake as the next most popular print! The red and white criss-cross pattern, usually associated with rustic country style, has been “reimagined in stylish, contemporary ways,” according to Better Homes and Gardens, a lifestyle and design magazine. It is easily one of the most popular styles at Maryland this year, and many students are wearing the pattern on pants, strappy tops and even frilly skirts. The right gingham piece will elevate any look, so here’s what to wear!
One of the most popular gingham items this year are the Gingham Boxer Shorts from Edikted. These can be worn oversized, or can be rolled along the waist to appear shorter and more fitted. The safest pairing for the boxer shorts is a plain tank top or tube top, preferably in white. Since the look can appear slightly white-heavy, students can complement these shorts with red accessories to tie the look together. Popular options include red headbands, bows, butterfly clips, or fun sunglasses.
Another trending option is a strappy gingham top. This Y2K tank top from Amazon or gingham halter top from Beginning Boutique are perfect for a gameday look. These tops pair best with denim, so anything from baggy jeans to a mini skirt is a great match. Gingham tops typically need fewer accessories because the top speaks for itself, but a simple shoulder bag is a perfect pairing to complement the look.
For those who love to dress up a little more, gingham is the perfect pattern for a dress. This Gingham Mini dress from Pretty Little Thing or the Gathered Mini Dress from Edikted are the perfect elevated gameday looks. If a dress feels too formal for you, the Bershka mini rara skirt from ASOS is the perfect happy medium. These can be paired with cowboy boots or plain white sneakers and a shoulder bag to tie in the more formal vibe.
“My friends and I matched wearing gingham shorts, each with a different shirt,” freshman Margo Benjamin said. “I loved how we were coordinated and how the gingham brought the outfits together for gameday.”
UMD students seem to be loving the gingham trend, and according to Kara Nesvig from Byrdie.com, a beauty and style blog, “the checkered pattern is a forever favorite,” that is here to stay!
