With the term coined by the popular sitcom “Parks and Recreation”, Galentine's Day is a Valentine’s Day-themed holiday meant to honor and appreciate one’s gal pals, and what better way to celebrate than to put on your favorite red attire and get all glammed up. Keep reading to find out what students at UMD did to honor the holiday with makeup and style!
Eni Ojumu, a freshman pre-vet Animal Science major, celebrated the holiday that takes place a day before Valentine's Day on Feb. 13 by going out with friends. “I was hanging out with my friends, and we went dancing, and today, as a part two, we're gonna do like a cozy dorm activity and stuff like that,” Ojumu said.
Though Valentine’s Day can have a negative connotation for people who don’t have significant others, celebrating with friends and adding a little glitter or highlighter to a regular makeup look can be just the thing to boost your mood. “Valentine's Day is a day of mourning for me, I'm sure most people can understand that, and that's why it was very dark and gloomy. But then my [my friend] decided to add some glitter to my eyes to add a bit of happiness to a dark situation,” Ojumu said.
Triya Pillai, a freshman chemical engineering major, paid homage to the holiday of love by showing appreciation to her friends in the form of heartwarming gifts. “I really love Galentines. So I decided to go to Target, and I got some kind of cheap flowers, but I wanted to give them out to my friends because I just got to spread the love,” Pillai said.
Pillai wanted to go for a more traditional route in terms of makeup touches–utilizing the color red to emphasize the color of romance and love. “I just did the glitter for my face, but for my lips, I went red because, you know, Valentine's Day…and red, I think, is more vibrant, and I feel like it's more unique,” Pillai said.
For students like freshman chemical engineering major Cassandra Nti, mascara was the most significant tool in not only enhancing her features but also adding a flare to her red and black-themed Galentines outfit. “I like mascara a lot, so I put on a lengthening mascara, then Volume Mascara, then on the back of my eyelashes, I curled it with another type of lengthening mascara called Telescopic. And then on the tips of all my lashes, bottom and top ones, I put red mascara,” Nti said.
Whether you have a significant other or not, Valentine's Day is all about showing appreciation to the people you love–from friends to lovers to family. So if not this year, try Galentines next year as a way to pay homage to the girl friends in your life… and maybe add a red lip to spice things up!
