October is here, the leaves are falling and everyone is in that autumn mood. While fall brings many fun activities, like football games, tailgates and bonfires, heading to a farm or an orchard is a favorite fall activity.
Many farms include apple orchards and farm stands, where the apples are turned into rich fall treats, like candy apples, apple pie, apple cider or visitors can enjoy the apples as a fresh snack by itself. Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, MD is about a 40 minute drive from the university, and is currently offering Gala and Cameo apple picking.

The farm also holds hayrides, a country store, pumpkin patches and even goats. Tickets range from $10-$17 per person, and run through October 31.
Junior business management and family science double major Julianne Okim says her favorite thing about Butler’s is the scenery. “You can ride on the hayride, take in the fields and just feel relaxed,” she said.

Senior biology major Diego Mora grew up going to haunted forests and haunted houses, and said it’s something he loves doing with family and friends.
“There’s usually a big bonfire and live music so it’s just a really chill event. Also I like laughing at people when they get really scared on the trail,” Mora said.
Markoff’s Haunted Forest in Dickerson, MD, about an hour away, is another great haunted trail option. Tickets are $45 and in addition to the trail, Markoff’s also includes food, bonfires, live performances and music.
Whether it’s fright night or chill thrills at the farm, this fall holds many possibilities for your next adventure.
