Craving a date night, but dying to stay in sweats and save money? Date night at home may just be the answer– these nights can be even more meaningful than going out on the town with your significant other. Date nights can be cozy, fun and bonding.
Jordan Cohen, a sophomore finance and international business major at the University of Maryland, says, “There's such an unsaid value in doing date night at home.” When the word date night comes to mind, people automatically assume fancy clothes and an expensive check. This doesn’t always have to be the case.
A date night at home can range from a movie night to face masks to baking a delicious dessert together. Cohen states that she and her boyfriend often cook a meal together. “It was nice to make a home-cooked meal together and enjoy it.”
With the fast pace of college life, it can be difficult to find a time to have date night in general. Cohen said that for her relationship, “it’s finding a balance and just communicating it through.” She said that a routine is helpful in making sure you are keeping up with date nights while also balancing other aspects of college life.
While date nights may be difficult to fit into a schedule, they prove to be extremely beneficial and significant to maintaining a healthy relationship. Kari Rusnak, a licensed couples counselor, wrote in an article published in Psychology Today that “spending quality time together without distraction boosts connection.” Rusnak emphasizes as well that date night is what you make of it, as long as it includes spending quality time with your partner.
Talia Vaknin, a sophomore hearing and speech sciences major at the University of Maryland, said that the purpose of an at home date night is “to just have alone time without the pressure of going anywhere or seeing anyone or any of those other factors.” While going out can be exciting and fun, staying in has its perks.
“Focus on the two of you and in the comfort of your own home” Vaknin stated.
Whether it’s playing a board game together or binging your favorite show, date night at home can be just as valuable and exciting as venturing to a new restaurant or town. Regardless of how you do it, it is important to devote time in your schedule to give undivided attention to your partner and celebrate your relationship.
